Kitchen islands are having a moment! Most homeowners redesigning their kitchens today opt for a kitchen island and house hunters seem to have this as one of their “must-haves” as well. Not only do they provide extra functionality in your kitchen, but they also offer the perfect place to circle around when the company is over.

We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite types of kitchen islands below.

  1. Base Cabinet: This type of island can either be on wheels or stationary and uses a cabinet base that already exists. When putting a base cabinet island together, you can use one, two, or three bases depending on how big you want your island to be. The next step is adding the countertop of your choice. This type of island is one of the less expensive options and has many benefits.
  2. Furniture: Another kitchen island that gives you the most options as far as shapes is a custom furniture piece. The fact that it can be made custom gives you all the options in the world to choose from when it comes to the size, shape, amount of storage you want to be included, etc. These types of kitchen islands can often give a kitchen a warm “homey” feeling.
  3. Table Island: This type of island is an island that has a table attached to one of the sides. We would only recommend this type of island in a large kitchen as it can take up a lot of space. It can be nice to have the added countertop and informal place to sit. It makes quite the statement in a kitchen. We just recommend that if you choose this option, you do plan on really using it, because if you don’t you may be frustrated that you’re wasting the space.
  4. Butcher Block: Butcher block islands are recommended for smaller kitchens. They can give you just the amount of extra space you need and you can cut right on the countertop! It’s important to keep in mind that they can stain a bit easier than other countertop options and may get “beat up” over time, but they’re not an expensive option and provide many homeowners with the functionality they are looking for.
  5. Round: A unique option for any kitchen is a round island that can truly add a design element to your space. The soft edges of a round island make it easy to maneuver around while also providing a special feature that will surely make your kitchen stand out!

Traditional Kitchen Islands

Timelessness, quality, and charm are some of the major things that define traditional kitchen islands. These kitchens mainly use natural materials and muted colors. They evoke a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes any home look family-friendly. Furthermore, the mix of classic principles and modern conveniences makes traditional kitchen islands timeless. They are ideal for those looking for an uncluttered look, family warmth, and timeless elegance.

Modern Kitchen Islands

Modern kitchen islands have gained popularity in recent years, mainly due to their brightness and sophistication. These kitchens mostly have minimalistic features, sleek lines, and cutting-edge technology. Their bespoke design elements change from time to time as trends evolve. These kitchen islands also have innovative storage solutions, such as pantry cabinets and pull-out shelves.

Popular Kitchen Island Designs

Whether you are looking for a traditional or modern kitchen island, the following are some designs to draw inspiration from.

Galley

Galley islands are built to be workhorses as they have a straightforward design and minimal frills. Assuming you have sufficient space in the kitchen, they are a good fit for any layout. They favor bar-style seating and ensure that appliances and stored items are always accessible.

L-Shaped

If you have more than one cook or any number of avid chefs in your household, an L-shaped kitchen island is an excellent choice. These island designs could offer more storage and prep space within the blank spaces in your kitchen or ebb and flow with the room’s shape. Their large size ensures plenty of storage space, and the workspace is never crowded.

Curved or Circular

A circular island is the ideal choice when you are looking to add personality to your kitchen layout. You could go for half-a-moon or install a full-circle. Circular designs also offer plenty of storage and working space. Furthermore, their seating areas are expansive enough to host four-plus guests comfortably.

U-Shaped

These designs, which popularly feature three walls of appliances and cabinetry, are any chef’s dream. These functional and spacious islands increase the kitchen’s efficiency and offer ample working space. When preparing food, you may not have to leave the island.

Furniture Style

Furniture islands are quite unconventional, but they also make the kitchen feel like the ideal hanging spot in the house. You can choose from various styles, including drawer chests, antique tables, or even a custom piece built by our expert carpenters.

Mobile

Is there no space to build a permanent island in the kitchen area? No problem. Mobile or rolling islands offer a superb alternative. They come with wheels so you can roll one into the kitchen when it’s time to chop vegetables and wheel it back out for dinner. These incredibly versatile islands are perfect for people with limited kitchen space and also tend to be very affordable.
